Town : Saint Gaudens

Towns and villages  >  French Countryside  >  Bigorre  >  Saint Gaudens

Saint Gaudens is the capital town of the Comminge area, between Toulouse and Pyrenees Mountains (Val d'Aran Valley).

Saint Gaudens stretches on a hill overlooking the Garonne River (small river at this stage of run) and the surrounding country side (hills, forests) with the Pyrenees Chain as a background to the south.

The architecture of Saint Gaudens is characteristic with walks and building frontages facing south and Pyrenees Mountains. You can admire many buildings with medieval marks and numerous artistic woodworks.

Saint Gaudens was a fortified town and girdled by a 5metres high wall. It particularly developed during the XIth century.

Today you can visit the Saint Pierre and Saint Gaudens Collegiale dating from the XIth century with its cloister and its chime (47 metres square bell tower with 36 bells.).

Due to its particular location, Saint Gaudens is prone to satisfy visitors looking for relaxation and which to discover the surrounding countryside walking, horse riding or mountain biking. You can also undertake nautical activities thanks to the close Garonne River.
